Make your own Fleece Hat by pollywriggle Make your own Fleece Hat by pollywriggle
This is the information I give members of my Hat Club at school - so it seems to have been pretty fool-proof as members of the class have been 8 years old and they've made their own hats by hand (with help from Miss, of course!)

Hopefully anyone who's looking to have a go will find this helpful. I tried a lot of patterns before designing my final pattern, the pattern kindly offered by :iconclearkid: is great, I actually used it in the photos, although I cut it differently as I use a longer shape in my final design.

To make a hat you need: fleece material (50cm width from a roll will get you started nicely), scissors, pale coloured pencil (pastel pencil or tailor's chalk for the pros), needle/thread, sewing machine if you're in a rush, buttons/felt/beads/niknaks/llamas for facial decoration if needed.

Huge good luck to anyone having a go, I'd love to see your hats - let me know if it's been useful and feel free to ask Miss if you get stuck!

And please take a look at my etsy shop - it's new and I'm self-conscious! [link]

How big would I cut the white pieces if I wanted it to fit a average person's head?

Use a piece of normal A4 paper, the shape should fit inside the page with about 5 cm from the top, bottom and sides ( at their widest part). The sides also go up straight for about 10 cm.

Best is to fold the paper in half, portrait, measure up 5cm, draw a straight line across from fold to about 5cm from edge, draw a straight line 10cm up, mark a dot on the fold about 5cm from the top and draw a curved line to meet it, then cut out and unfold (symmetrical pattern). Good luck!

The hat is made of a fabric called polar fleece.

You do this all by hand?
Reply
:iconpollywriggle:
pollywriggle Featured By Owner Feb 28, 2013
It can all be done by hand - fleece is soft so easy to hand sew. It is faster to use a machine for the sewing, apart from the face details which have to be by hand. I can hand sew one in about an hour.

"Pin the 2 pattern shapes together"
I'm stuck on this. I don't know which sides you pinned together, and I'm confused. I have sewed the two pairs on the side you've explained, but I don't know which way to pin them on what sides. Please explain? c:

Oh, I hope you're feeling better. I don't really think I deserve a prize... Unless I watched the Deviation for weeks, waiting for the perfect moment to strike and claim fave #500. Which I didn't!

The measurements are base 15cm, height 18cm, straight edge 10cm (until the edge starts curving towards the middle), best idea is to fold a piece of paper in half top to bottom and measure 7.5cm from the bottom away form the fold, 10cm up and draw a smooth curve towards the fold, which will have an 18cm mark for you to aim at, then cut that line and when you open out the fold you will have a symmetrical pattern for your own hat!

Is it ok to make this with a fabric other than fleece? Like an old t-shirt?
